How has communication changed and what is the expected impact?
New technology has made information readily accessible by an exponentially greater number of individuals than telephone, television or periodicals. This wide spread dissemination of information increases the likelihood of disbursement of misinformation or incomplete information. In addition, the use of social media, such as Facebook has created situations, where information is being used for unintended purposes.
I asked my classmates a few questions pertaining to this issue. 50% of those questioned think that it is ethical for companies to use your personal information to target advertising. The even split of responses is just another example of how ethics are relative to individual beliefs.
75% of respondents opined that it is ethical to post pictures of others without their permission. What if it was an unflattering picture or a picture taken out of context? This is where the lines of ethics blur for me.
